Blending Operations Using Rolling-Ball Filleting

چکیده

Blending sharp edges in solid models is an important task of Computeraided design. The prominent algorithms for producing blending fillet surfaces relay mostly on the rolling-ball method. These algorithms are applied on B-Rep solid models that are used in many CAD/CAM systems. Such solid models allow for a hierarchical approach of modeling which can incorporate blending operations within its structure. Blending on arbitrary meshes, however, falls into a different domain and is a challenging problem. This report describes an implementation of an edge blending algorithm applied to regular polygonal surfaces.

Generalized filleting and blending operations toward functional and decorative applications

The use of blending and filleting operations in solid modeling and computer-aided geometric design is well established. The question of filling a gap between two (or more) surface boundaries or rounding a sharp edge has been extensively investigated. The vast majority of the prior work on blending and filleting concentrated on a wide variety of fitting schemes as well as attempts to establish a...

Relative blending

Solid models may be blended through filleting or rounding operations that typically replace the vicinity of concave or convex edges by blends that smoothly connect to the rest of the solid’s boundary. Circular blends, which are popular in manufacturing, are each the subset of a canal surface that bounds the region swept by a ball of constant or varying radius as it rolls on the solid while main...

Relative Rounding

Solid models may be rounded through filleting or blending operations. In 3D, the faces created by rounding are portions of the canal surface bounding the region swept by a ball (of constant or varying radius) as the ball rolls on (i.e., moves while maintaining tangential contact with) the two solids. Procedural or algebraic definitions of how the radius of the ball varies as it rolls may prove ...

G 2 and the Rolling Ball

Understanding the exceptional Lie groups as the symmetry groups of simpler objects is a longstanding program in mathematics. Here, we explore one famous realization of the smallest exceptional Lie group, G2. Its Lie algebra g2 acts locally as the symmetries of a ball rolling on a larger ball, but only when the ratio of radii is 1:3. Using the split octonions, we devise a similar, but more globa...

Filleting and Rounding Using a Point-based Method

Rounds and fillets are important design features. We introduce a new point-based method for constant radius rounding and filleting. Based on the mathematical definitions of offsetting operations, discrete offsetting operations are introduced. Steps of our approach are discussed and analyzed. The methodology has been implemented and tested. We present the experimental results on accuracy, memory...
